Italian Tourist Left in Induced Coma After Brutal Barcelona Attack, Police Open Investigation
BARCELONA – An Italian tourist attacked in Barcelona remains in serious condition after suffering a violent blow to the head near the Parc del Fòrum area. Catalan police have opened an investigation to determine who was responsible and what triggered the incident.
The victim has been identified as 21-year-old Nicola Maggiotto, an Italian who was visiting Barcelona with friends. The attack happened on the evening of August 12, 2026, near a nightclub in the area between Barcelona and Sant Adrià de Besòs.
According to information confirmed by police sources, Mossos d’Esquadra received a report of a fight at around 10:25 p.m. Emergency services later transported Maggiotto to Hospital del Mar.
Italian Tourist Attacked in Barcelona After Night Out
Maggiotto had been spending time with a group of friends during his holiday in Spain.
According to accounts provided by people accompanying him, Maggiotto and another friend briefly separated from the group. The confrontation occurred shortly afterward outside the nightclub area.
Witness accounts cited by Spanish media indicate that Maggiotto was struck from behind. He reportedly received a powerful blow around the back of his head and immediately lost consciousness.
His companion did not require medical treatment.
However, Maggiotto suffered serious injuries and was rushed to hospital.
Victim Placed in Medically Induced Coma
Doctors subsequently placed the young Italian in a medically induced coma.
His father told Italian media that the measure was necessary because of brain injuries suffered during the assault. Reports published this week indicate that his condition remains serious.
The case has attracted significant attention in Italy. Moreover, consular assistance was activated to support Maggiotto and his family while he remains hospitalized in Spain.
Police Investigating Who Carried Out the Attack
The Mossos d’Esquadra are now working to reconstruct exactly what happened.
Investigators are expected to examine witness statements and any available footage from the surrounding area. The victim’s father has also filed a formal complaint with police in Barcelona.
Some early accounts describe a confrontation involving a larger group of young people. However, the precise sequence of events has not yet been officially established.
Therefore, claims circulating on social media about the attack should be treated carefully until investigators provide further details.
Security Guard Claim Has Not Been Officially Confirmed
The TikTok description refers to the alleged attacker as a security agent. However, reliable reports available so far do not establish that detail as confirmed fact.
Police have not publicly identified the attacker or confirmed their occupation.
For that reason, describing a security guard as the confirmed perpetrator would go beyond what investigators have established.
The confirmed facts are that an Italian tourist was attacked in Barcelona, suffered severe head injuries and was hospitalized in an induced coma. Meanwhile, the Mossos d’Esquadra investigation remains active.
Investigation Continues in Barcelona
Authorities now face the task of identifying those responsible and determining the motive behind the violence.
Witness testimony could play an important role. In addition, surveillance footage from businesses or public areas near the nightclub may help investigators establish what happened before and during the assault.
Until police complete that work, several details surrounding the attack remain unresolved.
Maggiotto’s condition, meanwhile, remains the central concern as his family waits for further medical developments.
