Uruguay’s Exports Fall 16% in August as Soybean Shipments Plunge
China accounted for around 20% of Uruguay’s total exports during the month. Brazil followed with roughly 15–16%, while the European Union accounted for about 14%. The United States represented approximately 11%.
Meanwhile, Brazil showed stronger demand. Uruguay exported US$182 million worth of goods to its neighboring country, representing a 30% year-on-year increase.
Vehicle exports played an important role in that growth.
January-August Exports Down Only 1%
Although August produced a significant decline, Uruguay’s accumulated export performance shows a smaller contraction.
Between January and August 2026, goods exports reached US$8.939 billion. That figure represents a 1% decrease compared with the same period in 2025.
The sharp decline in soybean exports played a major role in the annual result. However, stronger sales of beverage concentrates, live cattle and wood products helped offset some of those losses.
Therefore, August represents a particularly weak month rather than a 16% contraction across the entire year.
The coming months will show whether stronger-performing sectors can compensate for lower agricultural shipments and stabilize Uruguay’s exports during the remainder of 2026.
