Uruguay’s Interior Minister Carlos Negro has responded to a new death threat against him. He said the threat would not change his work or the direction of his team.

The Carlos Negro death threat emerged as security remains a major political issue in Uruguay. Negro addressed the case after appearing before the Senate’s Budget and Finance Committee.

The minister said receiving threats is always serious. However, he made clear that intimidation would not affect his decisions.

Carlos Negro Responds to Death Threat

Negro has extensive experience in Uruguay’s justice system. Before becoming Interior Minister, he worked as a prosecutor for more than 30 years.

During that career, he received other threats. Therefore, the latest incident is not the first case of intimidation against him.

Negro said the new threat does not change the direction of his administration. It also does not change the work of his team.

He added that threats often come from people linked to organized crime. Many of these individuals have records involving serious offenses.

Negro did not provide further details about the investigation. He is directly involved in the case as the person who reported the threat.

Threats Against Uruguayan Officials Raise Concern

The case comes amid broader concern over threats against public officials in Uruguay.

In August, lawmakers from the ruling Frente Amplio expressed support for Negro and Ana Juanche. Juanche serves as director of the National Rehabilitation Institute.

Both officials had received threats linked to criminal structures operating from prison. Lawmakers said democratic institutions would not surrender to intimidation or pressure from criminal groups.

The latest threat against Negro has once again put the issue in the spotlight.

Interior Ministry Strengthens Police Patrols

Negro also discussed the government’s public security strategy during his parliamentary appearance.

He highlighted stronger police patrols under the current administration. According to Negro, authorities have increased patrol activity in Montevideo.

The government also plans to expand police resources. Its budget proposal includes 100 patrol vehicles and 200 motorcycles.

These resources aim to improve police presence and response capacity. Public security remains one of the main challenges for the Interior Ministry.

Security Policy Will Continue

The Carlos Negro death threat has not changed the minister’s position. Negro stressed that he plans to continue his work despite the intimidation.

His ministry will also continue implementing its security strategy. That includes stronger patrols and measures against organized crime.

The investigation into the threat remains important. However, Negro has chosen not to reveal details while authorities handle the case.
