Chiba, Japan – A baby Japanese macaque named Punch has captured worldwide attention after finding comfort in an unlikely companion. The young monkey became strongly attached to a stuffed orangutan after being rejected by his mother.

Punch was born in July 2025 at Ichikawa City Zoo, near Tokyo. However, his mother rejected him shortly after birth. As a result, zoo keepers stepped in to provide the care he needed.

At first, staff tried different ways to give Punch something safe to hold. They even provided towels of different thicknesses. Eventually, however, an orangutan plush toy caught his attention.

The bond quickly became remarkable. Punch began carrying the stuffed animal around his enclosure. Moreover, videos showing him hugging and dragging the toy soon spread across social media.

Baby Monkey Punch Finds an Unlikely Companion

Physical contact is particularly important for young Japanese macaques. Normally, newborns cling tightly to their mothers after birth.

This contact provides more than warmth. It also helps young macaques develop muscle strength and gives them a sense of security.

Punch did not have that opportunity because his mother rejected him. Therefore, his keepers looked for another object he could safely hold.

Zoo keeper Kosuke Shikano explained that young Japanese macaques normally cling to their mothers immediately after birth. Since Punch had no mother to hold, staff needed to provide an alternative.

Eventually, the stuffed orangutan became Punch’s constant companion.

Videos of Punch Spread Across Social Media

Punch’s story soon reached audiences far beyond Japan. Videos showed the young macaque walking through his enclosure while holding or dragging the orange stuffed animal.

However, his early attempts to join other monkeys were difficult. Some footage showed older macaques pushing him away or chasing him.

Without his mother’s guidance, Punch had to learn how to navigate the troop’s social structure. Consequently, the stuffed animal remained an important source of comfort during that period.

The emotional videos attracted enormous attention online. In addition, visitors began traveling to Ichikawa City Zoo specifically to see Punch.

Why Did Punch’s Mother Reject Him?

The exact reason for the rejection cannot be stated with certainty. However, experts have identified several possible factors.

Primatologist Alison Behie of the Australian National University explained that maternal abandonment among monkeys is unusual. Nevertheless, factors such as age, health and inexperience can sometimes contribute.

In Punch’s case, his mother was a first-time parent. Therefore, inexperience may have played a role.

Furthermore, Punch was born during a period of extreme heat. Zoo staff have suggested that the stressful conditions may also have influenced the situation.

Still, these remain possible explanations rather than a confirmed single cause.

Punch Slowly Begins to Join the Group

Fortunately, Punch’s story did not end with isolation.

Later updates showed signs that he was beginning to interact more successfully with other macaques. A female monkey was even seen caring for and comforting him.

By late February, reports indicated that Punch had begun participating in more social interactions with the group. This represented an important step in his development.

Meanwhile, his stuffed companion remained close by.

Punch’s unusual friendship has turned him into an international social media sensation. More importantly, his story highlights the importance of physical contact, care and social development for young primates.
