Gold and Bitcoin Surge as Dollar Weakens and U.S. Debt Hits Record $40 Trillion
Gold and Bitcoin surge as the U.S. dollar weakens and national debt reaches a record $40 trillion, pushing investors toward alternative assets.
Gold and Bitcoin Rally as Investors Leave the Dollar
Gold and Bitcoin surge as investors react to major changes in the U.S. bond market. At the same time, concerns about America’s growing national debt have increased pressure on the dollar.
The U.S. Treasury recently announced plans to significantly increase purchases of longer-term government debt. The move aims to improve liquidity and calm pressure in the Treasury market. However, investors quickly questioned the wider impact of the policy.
The announcement initially pushed Treasury yields lower. Meanwhile, the dollar weakened as investors moved money into alternative assets.
As a result, gold and Bitcoin recorded strong gains.
U.S. Debt Reaches $40 Trillion
America’s national debt has now passed $40 trillion for the first time. The milestone arrived only months after the debt reached $39 trillion in March 2026.
In early July, the debt stood at $39.38 trillion. That figure was already $3.16 trillion higher than one year earlier, according to data released by the U.S. Congress Joint Economic Committee.
Therefore, investors are paying closer attention to America’s fiscal position.
Rising interest costs also create additional pressure. Moreover, concerns about inflation and higher energy prices have added uncertainty to financial markets.
Gold Benefits From Dollar Weakness
Gold quickly benefited from the change in market sentiment.
The precious metal climbed more than 2% following the Treasury announcement. By Friday, gold had risen to around $4,661 per ounce.
A weaker dollar can make gold more attractive to international buyers. In addition, investors often turn to gold during periods of fiscal or monetary uncertainty.
This trend has sometimes been described as a “debasement trade.” Investors reduce their exposure to traditional currencies and move toward assets that they believe can preserve value.
Bitcoin Jumps Above $77,000
Bitcoin recorded an even stronger rally.
The cryptocurrency had traded between roughly $62,000 and $67,000 for several weeks. However, Bitcoin broke above that range after the Treasury announcement.
By Friday, Bitcoin had climbed above $77,000. It gained more than 20% during the week.
The rally also forced many traders to close bearish positions.
According to CoinGlass data cited by AP, more than $4 billion in bearish crypto positions had been liquidated by Friday. Those forced purchases added more momentum to Bitcoin’s rise.
Crypto Policy Adds More Momentum
Bitcoin also received support from developments in Washington.
President Donald Trump called for faster progress on cryptocurrency legislation. In particular, he promoted the proposed Clarity Act as part of his administration’s push for clearer rules for digital assets.
Therefore, Bitcoin benefited from two major factors at once. Dollar weakness increased demand for alternative assets, while political developments improved sentiment around cryptocurrency.
Investors Watch the Dollar and U.S. Debt
The Gold and Bitcoin surge shows how quickly investors can react to changes in fiscal and monetary policy.
For now, concerns about U.S. debt remain an important market driver. The national debt has reached a historic level, while policymakers face pressure to control borrowing costs.
Meanwhile, inflation remains another key risk.
Gold and Bitcoin may continue to attract attention if investors remain worried about the dollar and U.S. government finances. However, both markets can move quickly as expectations about inflation, interest rates and Treasury policy change.
